How to choose
Match the actual size
Nominal size is not the filter size that slides into the slot. The Filter King actual size is 13.5 by 17.5 by 0.75 inches, the Simply actual size is 13.75 by 17.75 by 0.75 inches, the Maycold actual size is 13.70 by 17.70 by 0.75 inches, and the Filtrete actual size is 13.81 by 17.81 by 0.81 inches. Compare the actual size with your slot before buying.
MERV, MPR and FPR ratings
MERV, MPR and FPR are different rating scales, so compare numbers only within the same scale. The Filter King, Simply and Filtrete carry MERV 8, the Maycold carries MERV 13, and the Generic carries MERV 11. The Filtrete also carries MPR 700, and the Generic also carries FPR-7. A higher number on the same scale means a finer rating, so match the scale and the number to your system.
Packs and change timing
Pack size decides how many spares you hold, and change timing decides when you swap. The Filter King and Maycold come in 6-packs, the Simply comes in a 4-pack, and the Filtrete and Generic come in 2-packs. The Filter King lasts up to 90 days, the Simply lasts up to 3 months, the Filtrete changes at least every 90 days, and the Generic lasts up to 3 months. Set the next change date when you install a fresh filter.
