How to choose
MERV rating and MPR rating
A MERV rating grades how a filter captures particles, and an MPR rating is a separate scale used on some filters. The Filtrete carries MERV 11 and 1000 MPR, the Honeywell carries MERV 11, the Nordic Pure carries MERV 12, and the Filter King and Simply carry MERV 8. Compare the rating on each pick with the rating your system calls for, and do not mix the two scales when you compare filters.
Actual size before you buy
Nominal size is the size printed on the box, while actual size is the measured size of the filter itself. The Filtrete measures 15.88 in x 24.56 in x 4.31 in, the Filter King measures 15.5 in x 24.5 in x 3.75 in, the Nordic Pure measures 15 1/2 in x 24 1/2 in x 3 5/8 in, and the Honeywell measures 24.88 in x 15.94 in x 4.38 in. Measure your old filter and compare the actual size with the slot before you buy.
Pack size and change interval
Pack size sets how many filters you get in one purchase, and the change interval sets how long each filter stays in use. The Filtrete pack holds 4 filters with a 12-month change interval, the Filter King pack holds 4 filters that last up to 90 days, the Simply pack holds 6 filters with up to 3 months of filtration, and the Nordic Pure and Honeywell packs hold 2 filters each. Count your filters for the year, then match the pack size and interval to your plan.
