How to choose
Match coverage to your room
Start with the coverage each maker gives: 521 sq ft for the Homedics, 505 sq ft for the Levoit, 500 sq ft for the Crane and 400 sq ft for the LasVacde. These are the makers' own figures, so compare them with your room's floor area rather than treating them as a promise for every space. A larger tank helps only if the coverage also fits the room.
Warm mist, cool mist and controls
Ultrasonic models turn water into a fine mist. The Homedics offers both warm and cool mist with 5 mist settings and a programmable digital humidstat, while the Levoit uses a simple knob to set mist strength and the Crane has adjustable humidity control. A timer lets the unit switch off on a schedule: the LasVacde offers 3, 6 or 9 hours and the Homedics has a built-in timer.
Top fill upkeep made simple
A top fill opening lets you pour water in from above without lifting or flipping the tank, which all four picks here offer. Rinse the tank and the filter parts as the maker directs, and keep the opening clear so refills stay easy. Place the unit where the mist can spread, and use the auto shut-off as a backup when the water runs low.
