How to choose
Scheduling and auto-away
Automatic control starts with scheduling. The Honeywell offers 5-1-1 day, 5-2 day, 7 day, and 1 week programming plus a non-programmable option and auto-away technology. The Sensi offers 7-day flexible scheduling with geofencing, so the temperature adjusts around your comings and goings. The ecobee turns the HVAC off when an entryway stays open for 5 minutes. Compare the scheduling shapes against how regular your week runs.
Platforms and control
All three work with Alexa and Google Assistant, so voice control is common ground. The Honeywell adds Matter certification plus Apple HomeKit, and it controls through the First Alert app. The Sensi adds Samsung SmartThings and Wink, and it controls through the free Sensi mobile app. The ecobee builds Alexa and Siri in, and it ships with a SmartSensor for doors and windows. Pick the platform your home already runs on.
Wiring and install checks
Check wiring before you buy. The Honeywell requires a C-wire, and a C-wire power adapter may be needed for proper operation. The Sensi runs on battery or C-wire, but a C-wire is required for heat-only, cool-only, and heat pump systems. The ecobee includes a Power Extender Kit and Trim Kit in the box, and it is compatible with 95% of systems. Use each maker's compatibility check before ordering.
