How to choose
Match the nominal size first
A 12x12x1 filter is a nominal size. The actual size is smaller, so measure the old filter frame or the slot before ordering. Every pick here is a 12x12x1 filter, with actual sizes of 11.75 x 11.75 x 0.75 in, 11.81 x 11.81 x 0.78 in, or 11.81 x 11.81 x 0.79 in, depending on the pick.
Compare MERV ratings and pack sizes
MERV is a rating for filter media. Compare the MERV 11 picks with the MERV 13 picks, and check the particles given for each media. Pack size sets how many filters arrive at once, so match the pack to the change interval the maker gives for that pick.
Change intervals and airflow direction
Change intervals come from the maker: some picks give 90 days, and one pick gives changes every 60 to 90 days. Mark the change date when a filter goes in, so the interval is easy to follow. Insert the filter with the airflow arrow pointing toward the furnace or blower, as the Amazon Basics pick directs.
FAQ
What does a 12x12x1 filter size mean?
It is a nominal size. The actual size is smaller, for example 11.75 x 11.75 x 0.75 in for the Amazon Basics and Aerostar picks, so measure the old filter before ordering.

MERV is a rating for filter media. In this list, the Amazon Basics, Anycore, and GoldBon picks carry MERV 11 ratings, while the Aerostar and Filtrete picks carry MERV 13 ratings.
When should a 12x12x1 filter be changed?
Follow the maker interval for the pick. The Amazon Basics pick gives changes every 60 to 90 days, and the Anycore, Filtrete, and GoldBon picks give 90 days.
Do all five picks fit a standard 12x12x1 slot?
Yes. Every pick here is a 12x12x1 filter, so check the actual size against the old filter frame before ordering.
