How to choose
Match the nominal size first
Start with 16x25x1, the nominal size all four picks share, then check the exact size for each pick, such as 15.75x24.75x0.75 for Simply and Aerostar and 15.5x24.5x0.75 for Colorfil. A slide-in rectangular filter must fit the slot, and the compatible devices show air conditioner and furnace use. Pack size also matters for repeat changes: Simply and Aerostar are 6-packs, Filtrete is a 4-pack, and Colorfil is a 2-pack.
Understand MERV 8 and MPR
MERV 8 is the figure all four picks share, and it describes the particle capture level for this group. MPR is a separate figure: Aerostar is comparable to MPR 600, and Filtrete is MPR 700. Compare MERV figures with MERV figures and MPR figures with MPR figures, rather than mixing the two scales.
Plan changes and upkeep
Simply and Aerostar give up to 3 months of filtration, Filtrete gives a 3-month span and a change at least every 90 days, and Colorfil changes color from pink to yellow with use. Use the change cue for the pick you own: a countdown for Filtrete, with 30, 60 or 90 days in the app, or the color change for Colorfil. Follow airflow arrows when you insert a filter into the slot.
